The promise
You get a little better with every cup. A crooked heart still belongs to you, and the customer notices your effort. The challenge lives in the hands; the evening remains welcoming.
The distinction
Japanese café atmosphere, conversation and lo-fi already overlap with Coffee Talk Tokyo, released in May 2026. Make responsive coffee craft the reason to play: small physical decisions, readable consequences, and a satisfying urge to try again.
This is a research-backed design proposal, with one simplified interaction sketch. Timings, scores, dialogue and scope are untested design choices. “After Hours” is a working title; name availability has not been checked.
02 / REFERENCE NOTES
Borrow the feeling. Understand the mechanism.
The references solve different problems. Use their lessons selectively, then make the drink respond to the player's own decisions.
Observed: the live tutorial exposes click-to-pour, low and high pours, a direction/flow lock, a toothpick, and a fresh cup.
Apply: the milk pattern should follow the hand continuously. Use large, persistent pour-mode buttons on touch. Keep a fresh-cup reset in practice. Etching can wait; free-pour craft is the focus.
Verified: its field guide teaches wiggle patterns before adding cup tilt. It explicitly trains rhythm rather than modeling milk or predicting a rosetta.
Apply: teach a steady gesture in a low-pressure practice cup, then add movement and the finishing cut. Use a ghost rhythm as an optional guide; grade our own input trace, not a capability attributed to Oscillatte.
Verified: ConcernedApe's fishing development post describes a skill minigame, helpful bobbers, and personal records. It is a historical design source, not a specification of every current fishing detail.
Apply: a small input can hold a lot of mastery when feedback is clear. Use that principle for milk control, with wider tolerances as an assist. Let coffee behavior determine the motion; avoid random target movement in every station.
Verified: a job is structured around people, documents, tools and decisions. In his phone-port devlog, Lucas Pope explains enlarging the active work and preserving the satisfying stamp action.
Apply: customer above, craft below, order always visible. A receipt, portafilter lock and cup slide can supply a similar tactile ritual. For phones, recompose around one large station rather than shrinking the whole counter.
Conversation reference
Coffee Talk foregrounds listening and serving drinks with anime-inspired pixel art and jazz/lo-fi. Our proposal keeps recurring people, but limits each exchange to a few lines so cup-making holds the session together.
Pressure reference
Coffee Caravan combines recipes, equipment and order management; customer patience can end a run. For this concept, queue pressure belongs in an optional later challenge mode.
These comparisons establish design overlap and useful precedents. They do not establish demand, sales potential, retention, or that the proposed game will be fun.

Give the ritual a rhythm
Tap an order ticket into place. Scoop beans, hold the grinder switch, watch the scale settle. Seat the tamper once. Lock in the portafilter with a firm click. These are short, tactile actions whose consequences show up in the shot.
Espresso orders skip milk. Lattes give the complete sequence. After serving, knock the puck and wipe the counter in a brief transition. Practice can restart a single station instantly.

Default café mode has one active order, free pauses, and a remake option. Skill tension comes from the coffee changing while a station is running. Dialogue never burns a hidden patience clock.

ESPRESSO · 10–16 SECONDS OF PLAY
Read the shot.
Before the water starts
Choose a bean and adjust a coarse–fine dial. Hold to grind; release just before the dose target because a little coffee is still falling. Allow tiny pulses to finish. Drag the tamper level, press until seated, and release.
Tamping rewards flat, consistent seating. Extra pressure is not a flow-control superpower; that matches Barista Hustle's guidance. Keep it around one or two seconds.
During extraction
Tap Brew. Watch the scale and the stream, then tap Stop. A finer grind slows the game's flow; coarse preparation runs faster. The same bean behaves consistently. No random mid-shot pressure steering on this pump machine.
State & consequence
Track: grind setting, dose, puck level, elapsed coffee time, yield and stream stability. The recipe retains separate dose and output weights.
Example house recipe: 18 g in → 36 g out, with a 25–30-second coffee clock compressed into play time. La Marzocco presents ratio and timing as starting points to adjust for the coffee, not universal rules.
Feedback: “36 g arrived too fast. Try a finer grind.” Stream color supports the lesson; it does not prove real flavor. Score recipe consistency in practice and describe the cup in story mode.
Recovery: serve a less ideal shot or remake it. An early stop makes a short drink; a late stop raises yield. The player changes the next preparation to fix the cause.

MILK · 12–18 SECONDS OF PLAY
Find the whisper.
Air first, then a glossy roll
Tap Steam, then drag the pitcher. Vertical movement changes wand depth; horizontal movement finds the off-center roll. Steam stays on while the player repositions, so one finger is enough.
Start near the surface to introduce air. When the texture cue is ready, raise the pitcher to immerse the tip and continue rolling. This sequence follows Breville's milk-texturing guidance. Heating keeps advancing through both phases.
Give the hand useful feedback
Correct aeration has small ripples and a soft “tss.” Too shallow gives large bubbles and a splutter. A stable roll develops a moving glossy highlight. Captions say “Adding air,” “Too shallow,” or “Rolling,” so sound is never required.
State & consequence
Track: introduced air, texture uniformity, tip depth, roll position and heat. Texture and temperature are separate results.
Difficulty: begin with a broad stable zone. Later, a different fill volume shifts the surface and asks for a small correction. Avoid unexplained bouncing targets.
Finish: tap Stop near the shop's target. Milk type can change targets later; the first version uses one milk and a clearly labeled house recipe.
Recovery: excess bubbles make the art less clean but leave a generous pouring window. Overheating lowers the result; it never removes the next activity. Offer a remake and one useful explanation.
Choose High, Low or Cut, then drag over the cup to pour. Lift to stop. Changing mode pauses flow. Use automatic cup tilt initially; manual tilt can become an optional advanced control.
Heart: one central bloom and a straight cut. Tulip: several distinct blooms pushed into one another. Rosetta: wiggle while retreating, then cut through. Teach each additional gesture separately.
Milk should spread continuously from the input, with the player's actual result preserved. A small procedural pixel surface and local displacement are enough to test the feeling before considering expensive fluid simulation.
State & consequence
Track: spout position, mode, pour duration, cup fill, milk texture and gesture history. Fill is a visible, finite budget.
Readable mistakes: staying still creates a blob; uneven wiggles create uneven leaves; a crooked finish tilts the heart. Overflow ends the pour gently.
Scoring: story mode praises placement, coherence and care. Practice can assess rhythm, broad symmetry and the finish direction. Never require an exact hidden pixel template.
Reward: serve the real pattern, even when odd. A later cup sketchbook can turn imperfect results into memories rather than failures.

Try the two-phase decision. Start shallow, move deeper when the phase changes, then stop in the finish window. This isolates depth and timing; the full proposal adds pitcher position, surface movement and texture.

The amber band and phase change are deliberately explicit teaching aids. Heat is an abstract 0–100% game value. Optional audio is synthesized cue exploration, not recorded steam or finished game sound. This sketch tests understanding; it does not validate the proposed game's fun.

Let the coffee start a conversation.
Set the shop in a fictional Japanese neighborhood at dusk. Wood, ceramics, rain and returning faces create intimacy. Keep the location specific through researched everyday details when writing final dialogue; the mood image is an art direction, not a documentary claim.
Write four recurring characters, with three appearing each shift. Give each a drink preference, a small ongoing concern, and a different tolerance for teasing. Warm / Dry / Playful choices support the requested banter; a quiet option lets people enjoy just the craft.
Remember a preference or a previous joke. Relationships unlock a new line or an order variation. In the first version, use authored dialogue so the tone stays consistent and the game works without a live conversation service.

The visual direction
Use a fixed counter and three close-up workstations. Start with a 384 × 216 logical scene, crisp scaling, and a compact 24–32-color palette. Put readable interface text on its own layout so phones don't inherit tiny pixel lettering.
Warm amber surrounds the hands; cool indigo holds the rainy window. Use animation selectively: a blink, cup steam, a passing reflection, a grinder tremor. Keep the tool and liquid edges clearer than the décor.

An Aseprite workflow
Create editable portraits, props, hands and reusable liquid textures in Aseprite. Use layers, onion skinning and frame durations from its animation workflow. Keep clear clip names such as idle, grind, lock, steam and serve.
Frame tags organize clips; export PNG sheets with metadata, retaining editable masters and stable pivots. Animate character and prop frames around 8–12 fps while input and liquid response remain smooth.
Author the machinery and gestures in Aseprite. Generate the changing milk pattern in the game so it follows the player's hand. The illustration above is a mood reference, not an exported production sprite sheet.

Record original beans, cups, cloth and tools. For machine sounds, arrange a short recording with a cooperating café. Avoid capturing its background music or identifiable conversations. For placeholders, check each asset's license: Freesound uses multiple licenses, including noncommercial restrictions. Keep creator, source, license and edits in an asset ledger. Final music should be original or explicitly licensed for the game.

The biggest unknown is whether the coffee actions invite another cup. Test that before investing in a large story or café-management system.

Find the feel
Build isolated espresso, steam and heart-pour sketches using placeholder art. Try mouse and real touch hardware immediately. Let testers repeat each action three times and describe what changed.
Gate: people can identify why they missed and improve through a deliberate adjustment. If milk feels like chasing an arbitrary bar, restore the visible pitcher/surface relationship.

Make one complete evening
One counter, one milk, two drinks (espresso and latte), one house bean and a second unlockable profile. Three customers per shift drawn from four regulars. Heart art first; tulip later. Add short cleaning and serving transitions.
Gate: a fresh player completes the ritual without help, can pause and remake, and reaches a satisfying close in roughly 5–8 minutes.

Add personality and polish
Integrate the Aseprite artwork and original foley. Tune the touch layout, accessibility options and customer reactions. Add rosetta practice only when the heart feels expressive and readable.
Gate: people choose another cup for the craft itself. If they only want the next story line, revisit the interaction before increasing content.
A small, honest playtest
Recruit six people: three who play cozy games and three less familiar with them. Include mouse and touch use; ask a barista to review the teaching cues separately. Observe first attempts before giving hints.
Can they explain one cause of a poor result?
Does a chosen adjustment improve their third cup?
Can they make a recognizable heart after the short lesson?
Do they voluntarily make another cup?
Can they play with sound off and with wider tolerances?
Suggested decision target: at least 4 of 6 explain a correction and make a recognizable first heart; at least 4 choose one more cup. These are prototype gates, not statistical evidence of a market.
Keep the first version small
Defer walking around the café, farming beans, staffing, rent pressure, a large recipe tree, multiple milk chemistries, network play, generative dialogue and full fluid physics.
Prototype the liquid with a small drawing surface and inspectable gesture history. Keep art, input, simulation and evaluation separate enough to tune them independently. Use the engine the team already knows; choose a shipping engine after checking the feel on both target devices.
Primary risks
Repetition: shorten familiar prep and vary the craft goal. Stacked punishment: carry imperfections forward gently. Touch obstruction: place drag handles outside the liquid. Fake physics: require the visual result to follow the action. Scope: add one new gesture before adding another system.
First build recommendation: a latte for one regular, with a readable espresso stop, a two-phase steam, and a heart you actually poured. That single cup should carry the pitch.
